Shopping

Anyone not living under rock can relate to shopping, whether you are going shopping to a large box retailer, mall, boutique and everything in between. Shopping is in our genes, very small percentages cannot tolerate shopping, but yet they do it . We are merchandise driven economy and as such we spend 3 hours a day shopping, or 4,000 hours per year. Many financial planners and psychologist have answered the old question of:
Why Do We Shop?
Shopping, whether we like to admit it or not is an intentional thing we do. We go shopping for things we need, food, clothing, supplies etc. We go shopping to replace items, like a broken vacuum, a light bulb, and so forth. We go shopping because we want an item, whether it be the new 55“ Plasma HDTV, or the new hybrid car.
Women and Shopping
Some may even relate shopping to emotional ties. Let’s face it women are more culpable then men when it comes to shopping. A woman shops for many reasons, but the most important one that a woman usually gives , is that it makes them feel good. There is nothing more pleasurable than when you find your favorite purse marked down to 75% off. Psychologists call it “The thrill of the chase”.

Evolutionary Psychologists have a theory. When looking back at evolution, men were known for hunting and women for foraging. Shopping somewhat relates. Men want to enter a tore and leave as fast as they can after finding the product. If you look back men who hunted back then would seek their pray quickly and returned home with prize in hand. With women they were known to forage for the right plant, fruit, making sure that they were ripe and ready to be brought home. Women when shopping look and search through hundreds of rack , if not thousands looking for the best price, material, brand and so forth. Heck, you can easily shop for medical pot.

Shopping is now even easier for those who don’t want to leave the comfort of their home. Majority of retailers have online shops catering to the homebody. Online shopping stated in the 90’s, but it was not until 1995 when Amazon launched its online shop and in 1996 eBay followed suit with its website. In current years online shopping has become popular, since majority of households have a computer and a credit card and or debit card used for purchases. Online shops provide an extensive selection and completive prices. Online shopping provides a high level of convenience for the customer.

Last week during Black Friday sales Retailers reported that 7.4 billion were spent by Americans from Thursday to Sunday, showing a big difference from the 2010 sales. Analysts are hopeful that this year is a sign a progress for many Americans. Whatever the reason being for an increase in the biggest weekend sale was, shopping was at its highest. Retailers use these numbers to their advantages to continue to drive shoppers in from now until New Years.
